We begin our study of social studies
by looking at the world as a whole. Children are first introduced
to the ideas of air, land, water, hemispheres and continents.
Once they have developed a global perspective we explore our local
region. Colorful puzzles provide extensive hands-on exploration
of world geography. Boxes containing a variety of items from each
continent give the children a concrete link to peoples in other
lands.
The students at The Franklin Montessori School Forest Hills Campus
come from over eighteen countries. We take full advantage of this
unique quality to introduce our students to other cultures and customs.
On any given day children may act out an African folktale, delight
in a meal from India, or make music with South American instruments.
